Always leave people better than you found them!

My name is Ayana C. Tate, a 25-year-old hairstylist and entrepreneur originally from Camden, New Jersey, now based in Wilmington, Delaware. My passion for hair began in childhood, where I spent countless hours braiding the hair of my Barbie and Bratz dolls and sketching my dream salon on printer paper. Those early moments shaped the foundation of a dream that continues to evolve and expand.
I’ve been immersed in the beauty industry since the age of 17, starting as a shampoo assistant at my cousin’s barbershop. Growing up with a family of hairstylists inspired me to pursue a career in hair and beauty. My journey reflects the resilience and ambition needed to transcend challenges. While growing up in Camden exposed me to inner-city struggles, it also instilled in me a deep desire to aim for more. I pursued a business degree at Hampton University, where I honed my entrepreneurial mindset while running a successful dorm room salon, serving hundreds of clients.
Currently, I am a cosmetology student at Paul Mitchell The School, on track to graduate in January, while owning and operating Winks Inc., a company dedicated to enhancing beauty and empowerment. Additionally, I am the author of a guide for hair professionals, providing tools and strategies to connect with foreign hair vendors and expand their markets. Also creating a protective style hair grow oil, Herbs & Ish.
Over the past seven years, I’ve built a dynamic resume, working at barbershops, salons, beauty supply stores, and also Ulta Beauty. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of building relationships with entrepreneurs and celebrities, which has expanded my perspective on the industry. I specialize in textured hair, and take pride in creating healthy, beautiful styles that honor and protect the integrity of natural textures. My favorite service is delivering flawless silk presses and thermal curling, but I’m eager to elevate my craft by combining expert color techniques with extension services, such as tape-ins, I-tips, and K-tips.
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned as a hairstylist is to never settle for what’s given but to always seek more education and opportunities for growth. My long-term vision is to establish salon suite businesses both domestically and internationally, develop a line of hair products sold in major retailers, and create custom hair units that redefine beauty standards.
I stay motivated by reflecting on my progress and setting new goals. For me, the journey is about constant growth, pouring into myself so that I can continue pouring into others. My hope is to inspire other young hairstylists to dream big, embrace change, and always strive for excellence.
