As a child, I remember always being fascinated with eccentric hair colors and alternative styles from all subcultures. My mother would braid my hair and I'd always ask her to add a little hint of blue, purple, or whatever colors I could get my hands on. Being a little black girl, I didn't see much representation of people that looked like me in any of the alternative media I was consuming. As I entered high school, I decided to learn how to install wigs in order to try all of the crazy styles and colors I wanted without damaging my natural hair. I learned how to braid and twist so I could have all of my offbeat hairstyles without having to wear my hair in a straight style. I feel like there has been a lack of alternative stylists for women of color, and I hope to be a part of the solution to that problem.
