My name is Jennifer Diaz, I am a 20 year old cosmo student who attends Paul Mitchell the School Sherman Oaks. I would like to share to you all who I am and why I chose this path of beauty, I hope to aspire many people who are interested in turning their "dreams into reality". Born and raised in South Central LA, I was raised by a single immigrant mother in a small one bedroom apartment with my 3 oldest sisters. My mother didn't have access to any jobs because of legal status, so it was hard to make ends meet. My mom did every single thing you can think of by herself. One of my oldest sisters has a mental disability so my mom was always in and out of the hospital with her, on the bus because my dad was never around to help. Grocery shopping, welfare offices, my mom did it all. My oldest sister was pregnant at 14 so my mom had to also help her as much as she could. I always grew up as a happy child and loved to be around the friends and family I grew up with. As I got older and finished highschool, I knew I had to go to college because I felt like I had to atleast do something and not just sit around. In high school I was always an average student so when I got to college I felt like I didn't know as much as others did. I met a friend in college who I am really close to till this day that changed my life forever because she told me all about her life, family, and how she grew up. Not that her life was perfect, but it was definetly different from mine. My mom grew up in Honduras, a third world country where their society norms weren't like mine, me and my mother would argue a lot and I realized it was because she had a lot of built up anger from childhood trauma that there was nothing I could do about. It wasn't until that day that I realized the lack of resources that me and many other "minorities" had especially living in south central. My mind started to grow more and expand. I started off styling hair in my freshman dorm as a hobby but fell in love with beauty because I enjoyed making my friend's feel dolled up after getting there hair done and it was also a great way to make money, success and stablilization for me and my family, something I used to never think was even possible. I dropped out of college once I knew being a hairstylist was what I was meant for and now I am here at Paul Mitchell. One of my very favorite quotes that I live by "I'm about seeing long-term, seeing a vision, understanding nothing really worthwhile happens overnight, and just sticking to your script long enough to make something real happen". I am very passionate about my work and what I do. I am perfecting my craft and take pride in my art. I hope you can all see by my attached work below.
