Be excellent to each other

My name is Kyra Marks and I am a cosmetology student at Aveda Institute Brandon. On the days I'm not in school, I am working as an assistant at Belt Salon. I am the youngest girl of 7 kids, and I do hair for all of my siblings. I have a taste for unique hair styles, from shags to rainbow hair. I hope that with the art I create I can brighten up the world a bit. My goal is to be proficient in all types of hair services in order to serve clients from all backgrounds. Over the last six months at school, I have had countless people come in and apologize for their hair being too curly, too dirty, or too damaged. I want to create a space where people don't feel obligated to apologize for their hair, no matter the texture or condition. I want to make my guests feel comfortable with themselves and embrace their unique selves with customized and equally unique hair. Your hair carries a lot of emotional weight, and expressing how you feel with your hair can completely transform how you feel inside, and I want everyone who sits in my chair to feel good about themselves.

I dyed my own hair for the first time when I was 12 years old. Ever since then, my hair has been a canvas for my creativity. My father is an artist and I inherited his taste for color and bold choices. I have done every color from yellows to blues, browns and black. My oldest sister wanted to be a hair stylist from a very young age, but after some time she decided against it. After I graduated high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. My mom reminded me about my sister, and I realized that this is something I am naturally good at. Whenever my sister would cut my hair, I would ask her questions the whole time. I'd bother her about the way she was holding her shears, why she was lifting my hair up before cutting it, and all sorts of things that I'm sure annoyed her. I soon started watching popular hairstylists on YouTube, and shortly after that all my friends would ask me to do their hair. Once I started looking into hair schools, my mom's hairstylist recommended Aveda, the same school he attended. Since starting, I have found such a welcoming and close community of hairstylists, makeup artists, and other creative people; not just at school, but from outside classes I have attended, my salon family, and clients. I always knew I did not want a traditional corporate job, and I am so thankful that I have found a space where I am accepted for who I am, and can freely be myself.
