Sophia Thorngren

Hello! I'm Sophia and I am currently a cosmetology student at the Aveda Institute Tallahassee. I'm 22, married and a proud dog mom to a spoiled mini poodle named Muffin. I grew up over seas in Singapore and Australia, but my family originates from America- where we bounced around between the desert states of Colorado, Utah , and the northern state of Ohio 😊

My passion to enter into the beauty industry started when I was in high school, after going through my own beauty journey and discovery. I was never taught how to care for my hair type, let alone what type of texture it was, and spent years being frustrated and distressed by frizz and dullness. I knew I had thick curly hair, but I only knew how to treat it like straight hair and to use heat tools and hair potions to "get it under control". Mix in the flip flopping between dry and tropical climates and it caused quite a frustration- and hats and headbands could only do so much 😅

  Enter into middle school when makeup became the all the rage, it might as well have been a foreign language to me- I knew what I wanted to look like but didn't know how to get there. After a lot of trial and error, YouTube videos, collecting different products and observing family members and friends, I eventually figured out the basics by high school, and began learning how to do braids and updos & discovered tricks for makeup too.

I got my first balayage done my senior year, and it was the defining moment I knew I wanted to go to cosmetology school after getting my bachelors. After that, I spent my college years going to hair schools to get my hair done (an educational and financially smart decision!) when I discovered Aveda. After that first experience, feeling just how much better my hair felt and seeing the quality of work that each student put out, and the care towards the world the company had, I knew I had found my home. Four years later, three hair colors, countless appointments, and a cross country journey later- I finally joined up with Aveda Institute Tallahasse to continue my education.
